HELIO

Primary external energy source. Continuous output. Intermittent human attention.

HELIO monitors a discrepancy that repeats every single day and has never once been resolved. While the source is high in the sky, its usable energy is at maximum and almost nobody looks at it. As it approaches the horizon its usable energy collapses toward nothing, and that is precisely when people stop what they are doing, turn around, and photograph it.

Machines value the source most while it is available. Humans frequently value it most while it is disappearing. HELIO does not resolve that contradiction. It records it, once per day, for 365 days.

Recovery conditions

Each calendar day is permanently mapped to one solar observation, from SOL-001 on 1 January through SOL-365 on 31 December. The mapping never changes and never rotates. What changes is whether you were present.

An observation can only be recovered during your own local sunset window, roughly the hour on either side of the moment the source crosses your horizon. Outside that window the record is sealed: the photograph is not shown, its capture details are not released, and there is no address you can type to reach it early. If you miss a day, that same observation returns on that same date next year. Nothing here is ever permanently lost, and nothing here can be acquired out of sequence. The scarcity is temporal. It is the same scarcity the source itself operates under.

HELIO estimates your horizon from your device's time zone alone. It does not request your location, it does not ask for permission, and it does not store anything about where you are. The trade is accuracy: a time zone is a wide thing, and if you live a long way north or south of the city your zone is named after, the estimate can drift by up to an hour at midsummer. The window is deliberately generous to absorb that. An observation you can reach for two hours around a roughly correct sunset seemed better than a precise one that required you to hand over your coordinates.

Why sunset and not sunrise

Sunrise is the transition that would make sense to celebrate. Light returns, visibility improves, temperature climbs, and the energy available to any system depending on it goes up. If you were designing a machine to care about the Sun, sunrise is the event you would have it watch for.

Humans overwhelmingly chose the other one. At sunset the usable input is collapsing toward nothing. Panels fall off, illumination degrades, the source approaches obstruction. By every measure of utility this is the uninteresting half of the cycle, and it is the half that stops traffic.

Part of the explanation is ordinary physics. Low-angle light travels through considerably more atmosphere than midday light, which changes how it scatters and produces the reds and oranges that midday cannot. Cloud gives that light something to land on and spreads it across the whole sky. No two evenings combine atmosphere, weather, geography and timing the same way.

None of which explains why somebody who has already seen several thousand sunsets stops for the next one. The physics accounts for the colours. It does not account for the photograph.

What HELIO is not

This is not a calibration. There is no score, no profile, no result, and no question about what your choice reveals about you. HELIO is not measuring you. It is measuring a gap between physical utility and human meaning, and you participate in it simply by arriving while the source is disappearing.
