Positions you have recovered display their photograph and remain open to you permanently. Positions you have not recovered are inert. They are not links, they do not lead anywhere, and their photographs are not requested by this page, so there is nothing here to look ahead at and nothing to walk through by editing an address. Each position opens on its own calendar date, during local sunset, and closes again afterwards.

How the year is mapped

The grid runs in calendar order, left to right and top to bottom. Position one is the first of January and position 365 is the thirty-first of December. The mapping is fixed and does not rotate, shuffle or reissue. A given position holds the same photograph this year, next year and every year after that, which means the archive behaves less like a collection and more like a calendar that happens to be made of photographs.

Leap years are handled by exception rather than by renumbering. The twenty-ninth of February is not part of the 365 sequence at all. It occupies its own position, SOL-366, listed separately below and excluded from completion. This keeps every other position stable: the first of March is position sixty in a leap year exactly as it is in a common year, so nothing shifts underneath a record somebody has already recovered.

Why positions stay dark

A dark position means one of two things, and the grid does not distinguish between them, because from where you are standing they amount to the same situation.

Either the observation exists and you were not present for it, in which case it returns on its own date next year, or the position has not yet been filled from the source archive, in which case it will show a pending notice when its date arrives. Neither state can be resolved by clicking harder. The archive has no mechanism for acquiring a position out of sequence, and adding one would defeat the only rule the system actually has.

What the photographs are

These are not 365 remarkable events. Most sunsets are not remarkable. Some of these are genuinely striking, several are ordinary, and a few are frankly poor photographs of an overcast evening that somebody decided to keep anyway. That range is the point rather than a defect in curation.

The calendar position a photograph occupies is not a claim about when it was taken. Where a real capture date survives in the file, it is recorded on that observation's own page and may sit months away from the date the observation becomes available. The two facts are kept separate deliberately. A photograph taken in June and issued on a January date is still a record of the source disappearing, and the archive would rather show you a true capture date that disagrees with the calendar than a tidy one that was invented.

The intercalary position

SOL-366 · INTERCALARY OBSERVATION. Available on 29 February only. Deliberately outside the 365-position cycle and not counted toward completion.

The leap day exists because the Earth's orbit does not divide cleanly into whole rotations. Roughly a quarter of a day accumulates each year and is repaid in a lump every fourth February. It is a correction, not a date, and it is the only day in the calendar that has to be argued for.

It therefore gets a position of its own and is kept out of the count. Nobody should be told they hold 364 of 365 because they were not standing outside on a day that only exists three times a decade.

When every position is recovered, the archive assembles a single image of the source itself, built from all 365 individual sunsets. From a distance, one Sun. Up close, 365 separate moments of it disappearing.
