Volans is a small far-southern constellation representing a flying fish. It was created from Dutch southern-sky observations in the late sixteenth century and occupies a region between Carina, Dorado, Mensa and Chamaeleon. The stellar figure is modest, but its placement makes historical sense: early European navigators encountered flying fish in tropical seas, and the newly mapped southern sky became populated with animals familiar from ocean voyages. Volans’s strongest deep-sky target is NGC 2442, a distorted spiral galaxy whose asymmetrical arms have earned it the nickname the Meathook Galaxy. The constellation is quiet at first glance but connects exploration history with a genuinely unusual external galaxy.
Field Overview
Volans covers about 141 square degrees, ranking 76th among the 88 constellations. It lies close to the south celestial pole but not as far south as Octans.
Beta Volantis is generally the brightest star at around magnitude 3.75. Gamma-2, Zeta, Delta and Alpha Volantis create a compact elongated pattern.
The field is south of Carina’s dense Milky Way and near the Large Magellanic Cloud region, so the background varies depending on which side of the constellation is viewed.
How to Find Volans
Find Canopus and the Carina region, then move south toward the Large Magellanic Cloud.
Volans lies between Carina and Mensa/Dorado. Beta and Gamma Volantis provide the best internal anchors.
December through April evenings are convenient, especially January and February. Volans is circumpolar from many southern latitudes and invisible from most northern mid-latitudes.
Notable Stars
Beta Volantis, around magnitude 3.75, is an orange giant roughly 108 light-years away and the constellation’s brightest star.
Gamma-2 Volantis is a bright giant around magnitude 3.8 and forms part of a multiple system with Gamma-1.
Zeta Volantis, around magnitude 3.9, is another evolved giant and useful frame star.
Alpha Volantis is a white star around magnitude 4.0 and lies roughly 125 light-years away.
HD 76700 is a Sun-like star in Volans known to host a close-orbiting giant or Neptune-mass exoplanet, adding modern planetary science to the field.
Deep-Sky Objects
NGC 2442 is the principal galaxy in Volans. It is a barred spiral whose two arms are strongly asymmetric, giving the galaxy a bent hook-like appearance.
The distortion may have been caused by gravitational interaction with another galaxy, though the exact encounter history remains studied. Hubble imagery reveals dark dust lanes, bright star-forming regions and the galaxy’s uneven spiral structure.
NGC 2397 is another spiral galaxy in Volans with prominent star-forming regions and a bright central bulge.
These galaxies are moderate-to-difficult visual targets and benefit from dark southern skies and larger aperture.
History, Naming & Origin
Volans was introduced from observations by Keyser and de Houtman and placed on Petrus Plancius’s globe. Bayer later included it in Uranometria.
The original name Piscis Volans means flying fish and referred to animals European sailors encountered in tropical waters. The name was later shortened to Volans.
The constellation has no ancient Greek mythological identity.
Observing Notes
Volans is easiest with binoculars after Canopus and the LMC region are established.
The stellar figure is compact enough to learn quickly from a dark southern site.
NGC 2442 is the primary telescope challenge. Photographs show its strange shape immediately; visually, concentrate first on detecting the brighter central body and asymmetric extensions.
