Ursa Major is one of the largest and best-known northern constellations, but most people recognize only one part of it: the seven-star Big Dipper asterism. Dubhe and Merak, the outer stars of the Dipper’s bowl, act as “Pointer Stars” toward Polaris. The handle contains Mizar and Alcor, a naked-eye pairing that has served as a traditional vision test. Beyond the familiar Dipper, Ursa Major sprawls across a much larger region containing bright galaxies, including Messier 81 and the starburst galaxy Messier 82. The constellation is therefore both a practical navigation tool and a gateway to deep extragalactic observing.

Field Overview

Ursa Major covers about 1,280 square degrees, making it the third-largest constellation after Hydra and Virgo. The Big Dipper occupies only part of this enormous official region. Its bowl is formed by Dubhe, Merak, Phecda and Megrez; the handle continues through Alioth, Mizar and Alkaid.

Five of those seven prominent stars—Merak, Phecda, Megrez, Alioth and Mizar—are members of the Ursa Major Moving Group and share a common motion through space. Dubhe and Alkaid are not members, despite completing the same apparent pattern.

At northern mid-latitudes, much of Ursa Major is circumpolar. Its changing position around Polaris makes it useful for learning daily and seasonal sky motion.

The constellation lies away from the Milky Way plane, opening a relatively unobscured view into intergalactic space. Several of its most rewarding telescopic objects are therefore galaxies.

How to Find Ursa Major

The Big Dipper is the easiest starting point. From most of the northern United States, look generally north and search for a four-star bowl with a curved three-star handle. Its orientation changes through the night and seasons, but the proportions remain distinctive.

Once the bowl is identified, draw an imaginary line from Merak through Dubhe and continue roughly five times the distance between them. That line points toward Polaris in Ursa Minor.

To appreciate Ursa Major rather than just the Dipper, trace fainter stars extending south and west from the bowl into the Bear’s legs and head. These portions require darker skies.

Ursa Major is visible throughout the year from many northern mid-latitudes and is especially high on spring evenings. From southern mid-latitudes, only portions rise above the northern horizon.

Notable Stars

Alioth, Epsilon Ursae Majoris, is the brightest star in Ursa Major at about magnitude 1.76 and lies roughly 82 light-years away. It is a chemically peculiar A-type star and forms the first section of the Dipper’s handle away from the bowl.

Dubhe, Alpha Ursae Majoris, is around magnitude 1.8 and roughly 123 light-years away. It is an orange giant system and one of the two famous Pointer Stars.

Merak, Beta Ursae Majoris, shines near magnitude 2.37 at roughly 80 light-years. Together with Dubhe it creates the baseline toward Polaris.

Mizar, Zeta Ursae Majoris, lies roughly 83 light-years away and is part of a remarkable multiple-star system. Its nearby naked-eye partner Alcor lies close on the sky. A telescope also separates Mizar itself into a visual pair.

Deep-Sky Objects

Messier 81 and Messier 82 form Ursa Major’s premier galaxy pair. NASA places M81 at 11.6 million light-years with an apparent magnitude of 6.9. Binoculars show it as a faint patch, and a small telescope reveals its bright core.

M82 lies about 12 million light-years away and appears much narrower. It is a starburst galaxy whose central region is forming stars at an exceptionally high rate, driven in part by gravitational interaction with M81.

The Pinwheel Galaxy, M101, is another major Ursa Major target. It is a large face-on spiral but has low surface brightness, so dark skies matter.

M97, the Owl Nebula, provides a completely different target: a planetary nebula within our own Milky Way. Ursa Major therefore offers an unusually broad observing menu despite appearing at first to be mainly a navigation constellation.

History, Naming & Mythology

Ursa Major means “Great Bear” in Latin and was among Ptolemy’s 48 constellations. Bear traditions associated with these stars are very old and appear across multiple cultures, although the stories differ substantially.

In Greek mythology the constellation became associated with Callisto, transformed into a bear and later placed in the sky. Her son Arcas is often connected with nearby Boötes or Ursa Minor depending on the telling.

The Big Dipper itself is not a constellation. It is an asterism inside Ursa Major and has carried many independent cultural identities: a plough, wagon, ladle, cart or group of beings depending on the tradition.

That distinction matters because a visitor may already “know” the Big Dipper without realizing how much larger Ursa Major is.

Observing Notes

Use the Big Dipper as an observing instrument, not merely a shape. Practice the Dubhe–Merak pointer line to Polaris, then follow the curve of the handle away from the bowl to “arc to Arcturus” in Boötes.

Mizar and Alcor are a good naked-eye test and a rewarding binocular pair. A small telescope resolves Mizar more deeply.

For M81 and M82, start from Dubhe and star-hop away from the bowl. Low magnification is useful because both galaxies can fit within the same field. Dark skies improve the view dramatically, though M81’s core is fairly forgiving.

RELATED CONSTELLATIONS: Ursa Minor — pointer stars lead to Polaris. Boötes — arc of the handle leads toward Arcturus. Canes Venatici — lies below the handle and contains the Whirlpool Galaxy. Leo — broad spring-sky connection south of the Dipper. Draco — winds between the two Bears. Coma Berenices — continues into the spring galaxy fields.
