Triangulum is a small northern constellation with one of the most convincing line figures in the sky: three principal stars form a narrow triangle that requires almost no imagination. The constellation is ancient, but its modern importance comes from M33, the Triangulum Galaxy, one of the nearest large spiral galaxies beyond the Milky Way and Andromeda. NASA places M33 about 2.7 million light-years away. Its giant star-forming region NGC 604 is nearly 1,500 light-years across and contains large numbers of hot young stars. Under exceptionally dark skies, M33 can be glimpsed without optical aid, making Triangulum one of the rare constellations where a whole external galaxy may be visible to the naked eye. The page should remain distinct from Triangulum Australe; they are completely separate official constellations.
Field Overview
Triangulum covers about 132 square degrees, ranking 78th among the 88 constellations. It lies between Andromeda, Perseus, Aries and Pisces.
Beta Trianguli is the brightest star at about magnitude 3.0, followed by Mothallah, Alpha Trianguli, and Gamma Trianguli. Together they create the simple elongated triangle.
The field lies away from the brightest Milky Way, so the triangle appears against a relatively clean background. M33 occupies a large faint patch nearby and becomes the deep-sky focus.
How to Find Triangulum
Find the Great Square of Pegasus and trace into Andromeda. Triangulum lies southeast of Andromeda and north of Aries.
Mothallah and Beta Trianguli form the longer side, with Gamma completing the point.
September through January evenings are best, especially October and November. The constellation is well placed from northern mid-latitudes and visible from much of the Southern Hemisphere.
Notable Stars
Beta Trianguli shines around magnitude 3.0 and lies roughly 127 light-years away. It is a white subgiant or giant in a binary system.
Mothallah, Alpha Trianguli, is around magnitude 3.4 and lies roughly 63 light-years away. It is a close binary and marks one corner of the triangle.
Gamma Trianguli is a white A-type star around magnitude 4.0 and roughly 112 light-years away. It completes the easily remembered figure.
Delta Trianguli is a nearby binary system around 35 light-years away and is useful for observers interested in stellar multiplicity.
Deep-Sky Objects
Messier 33, the Triangulum Galaxy, is the defining object. NASA places it about 2.7 million light-years away. It is a large spiral galaxy and one of the major members of the Local Group along with the Milky Way and Andromeda.
M33 has a lower surface brightness than M31, making it surprisingly difficult from light-polluted sites despite its large apparent size. Under dark skies, binoculars reveal a broad diffuse glow; telescopes show bright knots within the spiral arms.
NGC 604 is one of the largest known star-forming regions in the Local Group. Hubble material describes it as nearly 1,500 light-years across. In moderate telescopes, it can appear as a distinct bright patch within M33.
History, Naming & Origin
Triangulum was among Ptolemy’s 48 constellations. Ancient Greek sources associated the triangular shape with the Greek letter Delta and with the island of Sicily, whose roughly triangular form was culturally famous.
The simplicity of the geometry helped preserve the constellation across centuries of star mapping.
IMPORTANT: Triangulum is the northern constellation with slug `triangulum`. It is not Triangulum Australe.
Observing Notes
Triangulum is ideal for naked-eye constellation learning and deep-sky progression. First identify the three-star figure, then attempt M33.
M33 is a sky-quality test. A large telescope does not compensate fully for bright sky because its light is spread over a broad area. Dark adaptation and transparency matter enormously.
Once M33 is visible, try to identify NGC 604 as a brighter knot inside the galaxy.
