Triangulum Australe is a compact southern constellation whose name means Southern Triangle. It is not a southern extension of Triangulum and not a duplicate. It is a separate official constellation with its own abbreviation, TrA, genitive, boundaries and required slug `triangulum-australe`. Its three main stars—Atria, Beta Trianguli Australis and Gamma Trianguli Australis—form a bright, almost equilateral triangle that is much more conspicuous than the northern Triangulum. The constellation sits near Centaurus and Ara in the southern Milky Way and contains open cluster NGC 6025. It is one of the easiest southern constellations to recognize and an ideal example of why similar names must not be conflated in code.

Field Overview

Triangulum Australe covers about 110 square degrees, ranking 83rd among the 88 constellations. It lies between Centaurus, Ara, Apus and Circinus.

Atria, Alpha Trianguli Australis, shines around magnitude 1.9. Beta and Gamma TrA are also bright, creating one of the strongest compact geometric patterns in the southern sky.

The Milky Way runs near the field, so binoculars reveal a rich background. The primary triangle remains obvious because its stars are much brighter than most surrounding sources.

How to Find Triangulum Australe

Find Alpha and Beta Centauri or Crux first. Move south and east toward Ara and Circinus.

The bright triangle formed by Atria, Beta and Gamma is difficult to mistake once the region is in view.

April through August evenings are best, especially May through July. The constellation is circumpolar or nearly so from many southern latitudes and inaccessible from most mid-northern locations.

Notable Stars

Atria, Alpha Trianguli Australis, is an orange giant around magnitude 1.9 and lies roughly 390 light-years away. Its name is a modern contraction of Alpha Trianguli Australis.

Beta Trianguli Australis shines around magnitude 2.85 and is a white main-sequence star roughly 40 light-years away.

Gamma Trianguli Australis is around magnitude 2.9 and is another bright A-type star roughly 185 light-years away.

Delta Trianguli Australis, around magnitude 3.85, extends the field beyond the basic three-star symbol.

Deep-Sky Objects

NGC 6025 is the constellation’s best-known open cluster. It lies several thousand light-years away and is easily visible in binoculars as a compact stellar grouping.

The cluster contains dozens of stars and becomes more impressive in a small telescope at low power.

The broader Milky Way region contains additional open clusters and dark dust, though Triangulum Australe is better known for its naked-eye geometry than for a single major nebula.

History, Naming & Origin

Triangulum Australe was introduced from southern-sky observations by Dutch navigators in the late sixteenth century and appeared on Petrus Plancius’s globe before Bayer included it in Uranometria.

Its name explicitly distinguishes it from the ancient northern Triangulum.

This distinction must remain explicit in implementation: - Triangulum → slug `triangulum` - Triangulum Australe → slug `triangulum-australe`

They are two different IAU constellations and together contribute two records to the official count of 88.

Observing Notes

Triangulum Australe is one of the easiest southern patterns to learn naked-eye.

Use binoculars afterward to inspect NGC 6025 and the surrounding Milky Way.

Compare its nearly equilateral bright triangle with the narrower, fainter northern Triangulum. Similar names do not mean similar visual character.
