Sextans is a large faint constellation created by Johannes Hevelius to commemorate the sextant he used for measuring stellar positions. The field lies below Leo and contains no star brighter than about magnitude 4.5. That lack of bright anchors fits the instrument theme: Sextans is not a visual picture so much as a measured region. Its galaxy content is much stronger. NGC 3115, the Spindle Galaxy, is a lenticular galaxy about 32 million light-years away with a central black hole estimated at roughly a billion solar masses. Sextans A is a nearby dwarf irregular galaxy whose scattered star-forming regions provide a completely different example of galactic structure. The constellation rewards precision more than casual pattern recognition.
Field Overview
Sextans covers about 314 square degrees, ranking 47th among the 88 constellations. It lies south of Leo and between Hydra and Crater.
Alpha Sextantis is the brightest star at only about magnitude 4.5. Gamma, Beta and Delta Sextantis are all fainter.
The constellation lies away from the Milky Way, producing a sparse foreground and a clear extragalactic window. That makes galaxies more important than stars for the page’s scientific identity.
How to Find Sextans
Find Regulus in Leo and Alphard in Hydra. Sextans lies between them, directly below Leo.
Alpha Sextantis is the best internal anchor, but binoculars are often necessary from suburban skies.
February through May evenings are best, especially March and April. Sextans lies near the celestial equator and is accessible from both hemispheres.
Notable Stars
Alpha Sextantis is a white A-type giant or subgiant around magnitude 4.5 and several hundred light-years away.
Gamma Sextantis is a multiple-star system and a useful telescope target despite its faint naked-eye appearance.
Beta Sextantis and Delta Sextantis provide the remaining field references.
The stars themselves are not famous, and the page should not pretend otherwise. Sextans’s importance comes from what lies behind them and from its instrumental history.
Deep-Sky Objects
NGC 3115, Caldwell 53, is the best-known galaxy in Sextans. NASA places it about 32 million light-years away at magnitude 9.9. It is a lenticular galaxy seen nearly edge-on, with a bright bulge and disk but no major spiral arms.
NASA notes that its central black hole has an estimated mass around one billion times the Sun’s mass. The galaxy contains mostly older stars and relatively little material for new star formation.
Sextans A is a dwarf irregular galaxy about 4 million light-years away in the Local Group neighborhood. Its patchy shape is driven by large regions of star formation rather than a stable spiral pattern.
The contrast between NGC 3115 and Sextans A is excellent: one is a massive, old, organized lenticular; the other is a small irregular galaxy still forming stars in scattered complexes.
History, Naming & Origin
Hevelius introduced Sextans Uraniae in the seventeenth century, representing the astronomical sextant he used for measuring stellar positions.
His own sextant was destroyed in a fire at his observatory in 1679, giving the constellation a personal memorial dimension.
The name was later shortened to Sextans.
Observing Notes
Sextans is chart-driven. Use Regulus and Alphard to bracket the area.
NGC 3115 is the best telescope target and is accessible in moderate apertures under dark skies. Its bright central bulge is easier than its outer disk.
Sextans A is much lower in surface brightness and is substantially more difficult visually despite being much closer.
