Serpens is unique among the 88 official constellations: it is one constellation divided into two completely separate regions of sky. Serpens Caput, the Serpent’s Head, lies west of Ophiuchus, while Serpens Cauda, the Serpent’s Tail, lies east of Ophiuchus. The Serpent Bearer physically separates the two official areas, yet the IAU still recognizes Serpens as one constellation with one abbreviation, Ser, and one genitive, Serpentis. This page and CARS-05 field must therefore remain one record. The split is not an implementation bug; it is the defining geometry. Serpens also contains two major Messier objects in its two halves: M5 in Caput and M16, the Eagle Nebula and Pillars of Creation region, in Cauda.

Field Overview

Serpens covers about 637 square degrees in total when both disconnected regions are combined, ranking 23rd among the 88 constellations.

Serpens Caput contains the brighter naked-eye head figure, including Unukalhai, Alpha Serpentis, and several stars forming a triangular or serpentine head. Serpens Cauda extends through a dense Milky Way region east of Ophiuchus toward Aquila and Scutum.

The two halves have very different visual environments. Caput lies in a relatively cleaner field; Cauda enters the rich Milky Way and contains the Eagle Nebula.

How to Find Serpens

Find Ophiuchus first. The constellation is the key to understanding Serpens.

To the west of Ophiuchus, locate Unukalhai and the compact Serpens Caput pattern. To the east, trace Serpens Cauda toward Scutum and Aquila.

May through August evenings are best, especially June and July. The constellation spans enough sky that both regions should be learned separately before mentally reconnecting them through Ophiuchus.

Notable Stars

Unukalhai, Alpha Serpentis, is the brightest star in Serpens at about magnitude 2.6 and lies roughly 75 light-years away. It is an orange giant and anchors Caput.

Eta Serpentis, around magnitude 3.3, lies in Cauda and serves as one of the best anchors on the opposite side of Ophiuchus.

Mu Serpentis and Xi Serpentis help define the eastern tail region, while Beta and Gamma Serpentis contribute to the western head.

Tau Serpentis and several numbered stars are useful in tracing the long discontinuous body conceptually, though the modern boundary gap remains real.

Deep-Sky Objects

Messier 5 lies in Serpens Caput and is one of the finest globular clusters in the sky. It is roughly 24,500 light-years away and contains a large population of old stars. Binoculars show a bright fuzzy spot; telescopes resolve a rich halo.

Messier 16 lies in Serpens Cauda. NASA places the Eagle Nebula about 7,000 light-years away. M16 includes both the emission nebula IC 4703 and young open cluster NGC 6611. The famous Pillars of Creation are dense columns of gas and dust being eroded by ultraviolet radiation from massive young stars while new stars form inside.

This makes Serpens almost absurdly well balanced: one half contains a relic of ancient stellar populations, while the other contains active star birth.

History, Naming & Origin

Serpens was part of the ancient Ophiuchus-Serpent figure and was included in Ptolemy’s catalog as the snake held by the Serpent Bearer.

When modern constellation boundaries were standardized, Serpens remained one constellation even though Ophiuchus splits it into two separate official regions.

THIS MUST REMAIN ONE ARCHIVE RECORD. Serpens Caput and Serpens Cauda are subdivisions of one constellation, not two IAU constellations.

Observing Notes

Learn Caput and Cauda independently. Trying to trace a continuous naked-eye snake through Ophiuchus creates confusion because the modern official regions are genuinely disconnected.

M5 is an excellent telescope target even from moderate light pollution. M16 benefits much more from dark skies and wide-field viewing; nebula filters help visually.

The Pillars of Creation themselves are primarily photographic in small instruments. The surrounding Eagle Nebula and cluster are the practical observing targets.
