Sagitta is a tiny ancient constellation representing an arrow. It is the third-smallest official constellation after Crux and Equuleus, yet its shape is among the most immediately convincing in the sky: a short shaft ending in a pointed head. Sagitta lies in the summer Milky Way near Altair, between Vulpecula and Aquila. Its most important deep-sky object is Messier 71, a relatively loose globular cluster about 13,000 light-years away. NASA notes that M71’s nature was debated for decades because it is far less concentrated than typical globulars; astronomers once classified it as a dense open cluster. The constellation is therefore small but unusually efficient: clear geometry, ancient history and one object that teaches how astronomical categories themselves can change with evidence.
Field Overview
Sagitta covers only about 80 square degrees, ranking 86th among the 88 constellations. Its principal stars form a clean arrow-like figure.
Gamma Sagittae is the brightest at about magnitude 3.5. Delta Sagittae, Alpha Sagittae and Beta Sagittae build the shaft and arrowhead.
The Milky Way runs directly through the field, so Sagitta sits against a rich background. Despite that density, the four-star geometry is compact enough to stand out under dark summer skies.
How to Find Sagitta
Find Altair in Aquila. Sagitta lies just north of Altair and south of Vulpecula.
Look for a short line with a small arrowhead. Gamma Sagittae forms the tip or one of the strongest forward references depending on the chosen line convention.
June through September evenings are best, especially July and August. The constellation is accessible from both hemispheres but better placed in the north.
Notable Stars
Gamma Sagittae is an orange giant around magnitude 3.5 and lies roughly 275 light-years away.
Delta Sagittae, around magnitude 3.8, is a binary system containing an evolved red-orange star.
Alpha Sagittae, Sham, is around magnitude 4.4 and lies near the arrow’s shaft. The proper name derives from Arabic for “arrow.”
Beta Sagittae is around magnitude 4.4 and helps define the compact tail end.
U Sagittae is an eclipsing binary whose brightness changes predictably as its component stars pass in front of one another. It is a useful target for amateur variable-star observers.
Deep-Sky Objects
Messier 71 is Sagitta’s defining deep-sky object. NASA places it about 13,000 light-years away and about 27 light-years across. Its stars are roughly 9–10 billion years old.
M71 is unusually sparse for a globular cluster. For many years astronomers debated whether it was a very dense open cluster instead. By the 1970s, stellar populations and other evidence supported its globular classification.
At magnitude around 6.1, M71 is easy in binoculars under good conditions and becomes a granular glow in small telescopes. Larger instruments resolve more of the loose cluster.
History, Naming & Origin
Sagitta was among Ptolemy’s 48 constellations. The arrow was associated with several Greek stories, including weapons used by Heracles or Apollo, but no single myth dominates universally.
Its simple shape likely contributed to the persistence of the identity. Unlike elaborate figures requiring imaginative line art, Sagitta really does look like a small arrow.
The Latin name Sagitta means arrow; Sagittae is the genitive form.
Observing Notes
Sagitta is one of the easiest small constellations to learn. Use Altair, then scan north.
Binoculars are ideal because they can show the entire arrow and M71 in the same broader region.
A small telescope on M71 demonstrates the cluster’s loose structure. Compare it with a concentrated globular such as M13 or M3 and the classification history becomes visually understandable.
