Pisces is a large but faint zodiac constellation representing two fish tied together by a cord. Its stars form two loose groups connected by a long chain, which makes the entire figure difficult to see at once. The easiest entry point is the Circlet, a small ring of stars south of the Great Square of Pegasus. Pisces contains Messier 74, a nearly face-on grand-design spiral galaxy about 32 million light-years away. M74 is beautiful in photographs but notoriously difficult through small telescopes because its light is spread over a large area. Pisces is therefore an excellent constellation for patient observing: little about it is bright, compact or immediate, but its structure rewards careful navigation.
Field Overview
Pisces covers about 889 square degrees, ranking 14th among the 88 constellations. The familiar figure is divided into two fish: a western fish represented partly by the Circlet and a northern fish near Andromeda, connected by a long cord converging at Alrescha.
No star in Pisces is brighter than fourth magnitude. Alpherg, Eta Piscium, is generally the brightest at about magnitude 3.6, but it does not dominate the constellation.
Pisces lies away from the bright Milky Way, so the field is sparse. This helps once the correct stars are found but makes initial acquisition frustrating because there are few obvious landmarks inside the constellation itself.
The ecliptic passes through Pisces. The vernal equinox point is currently located in Pisces because of Earth’s axial precession, despite the historical phrase “First Point of Aries.”
How to Find Pisces
Use the Great Square of Pegasus as the primary landmark. The Circlet lies south of the Square and is a compact group of modest stars forming an irregular ring. Once the Circlet is found, trace the chain eastward toward Alrescha, then northward toward the second fish.
Pisces is best placed from roughly September through December evenings, especially October and November. At northern mid-latitudes it can climb reasonably high but remains difficult from cities because the stars are faint.
Southern Hemisphere observers see Pisces during the same season, often at a good altitude because much of the constellation lies near the celestial equator.
Binoculars are extremely helpful for learning the field, but once the chains are recognized, naked-eye viewing from a dark site gives the best sense of the full large-scale structure.
Notable Stars
Alpherg, Eta Piscium, is generally Pisces’s brightest star at around magnitude 3.6 and lies roughly 350 light-years away. It is a yellow giant and forms part of the northern fish region.
Alrescha, Alpha Piscium, is around magnitude 3.8 combined and lies roughly 150 light-years away. Its name refers to the cord or knot, matching its traditional location where the two fishes’ connecting lines meet. A telescope resolves it as a binary system.
Fumalsamakah, Beta Piscium, shines around magnitude 4.5 and lies roughly 410 light-years away. It helps define the western fish.
Gamma Piscium is around magnitude 3.7 and roughly 140 light-years away. It is an evolved yellow-orange giant and one of the brighter points in the Circlet region.
Van Maanen’s Star, although far too faint for naked-eye observing, is a nearby white dwarf about 14 light-years away and is scientifically notable as one of the closest isolated white dwarfs to the Sun.
Deep-Sky Objects
Messier 74 is Pisces’s premier deep-sky object. NASA places it roughly 32 million light-years away and gives it an apparent magnitude of 10.0. It is a nearly face-on grand-design spiral galaxy with well-defined arms and active star-forming regions.
Despite its catalog magnitude, M74 is one of the more difficult Messier objects to observe because its light is spread across a relatively large apparent area. A small telescope may show only a faint round glow around the nucleus. Dark skies matter enormously.
The galaxy is worth the effort because it provides a direct visual example of surface brightness. An object can have a respectable integrated magnitude and still be difficult if that light is diluted across a broad patch of sky.
Pisces contains other faint galaxies, but M74 is overwhelmingly the best first target.
History, Naming & Mythology
Pisces was among Ptolemy’s 48 constellations and belongs to an older tradition of fish imagery in Mesopotamian astronomy. The Greek and Roman story most commonly connects the two fish with Aphrodite and Eros, who escape the monster Typhon by transforming into fish or being carried by fish, depending on the version.
The cord binding the pair is important to the traditional figure and explains the proper name Alrescha, “the cord” or “knot.”
As with many zodiac constellations, later Western mythology was layered onto older Near Eastern sky traditions rather than created from scratch.
Pisces also holds a subtle modern astronomical distinction: the March equinox currently occurs within its official boundaries due to precession.
Observing Notes
Pisces is best attempted after Pegasus is secure. Find the Great Square, then drop south to the Circlet. If the Circlet is invisible, use binoculars first and return to the naked eye after you know exactly where to look.
M74 requires a dark, moonless night. Use low magnification initially; excessive magnification spreads the already faint light and can make the galaxy disappear. Averted vision helps reveal the central glow.
Alrescha is a useful telescope double once the larger constellation has been located.
Pisces is not a showpiece field. Its reward is learning to maintain orientation across a long chain of faint stars without a dominant anchor.

CARS-05 Field Notes
PSC-30 is a continuity field. Two local structures can be acquired independently, but neither is sufficient to identify the complete target. The defining information is carried by the long low-confidence connection between them.
Operators tend to solve the Circlet and stop. CARS-05 does not. The remote junction node must be verified before coherence is granted.
This field rewards continuity across weak signal rather than confidence within a bright local pattern.
