Perseus is a northern constellation lying between Cassiopeia, Andromeda and Taurus. Its brightest star, Mirfak, sits in a loose association of hot young stars, while Algol is one of the most famous variable stars in the sky. Algol regularly fades because stars in its system eclipse one another, and the change can be followed with the naked eye. Perseus also contains the Double Cluster, NGC 869 and NGC 884, two neighboring open clusters visible without optical aid from very dark sites and spectacular in binoculars. The constellation’s star pattern is less obvious than Cassiopeia’s W, but its combination of variability, young stars and rich clusters makes it one of the most rewarding regions of the northern autumn and winter sky.

Field Overview

Perseus covers about 615 square degrees, ranking 24th among the 88 constellations. The main figure is a branching chain rather than a compact polygon. Mirfak anchors the central region, with stars extending toward Cassiopeia, Andromeda and Taurus. Algol lies south of Mirfak and forms one of the most recognizable points once its position is learned.

The Milky Way runs through Perseus, producing a dense background and several major open clusters. The Alpha Persei Cluster surrounds Mirfak, while the Double Cluster lies toward Cassiopeia.

Perseus is also home to the Perseus molecular cloud, a nearby star-forming region studied extensively at infrared and radio wavelengths. The visual constellation therefore combines young stellar populations with one of astronomy’s classic eclipsing systems.

How to Find Perseus

Start with Cassiopeia’s W on an autumn or winter evening. Perseus lies immediately southeast of Cassiopeia and north of the Pleiades in Taurus. Mirfak is the brightest obvious star in the central region.

From Mirfak, move south toward Algol. The star is normally around second magnitude but periodically fades enough that its change can be noticed by comparing it with nearby stars over several hours.

The Double Cluster lies between Perseus and Cassiopeia and appears as a faint hazy patch under dark skies. Binoculars make it unmistakable.

Perseus is best placed from roughly October through February at northern mid-latitudes. Much of it is circumpolar from higher northern latitudes. Southern observers can see the constellation from lower and mid-southern latitudes, but it stays toward the northern sky.

Notable Stars

Mirfak, Alpha Persei, shines around magnitude 1.8 and lies roughly 500 light-years away. It is a yellow-white supergiant and the brightest member of the Alpha Persei Cluster, a loose association of young stars easily explored with binoculars.

Algol, Beta Persei, normally shines around magnitude 2.1 but drops to roughly magnitude 3.4 during its primary eclipse. NASA describes it as a triple-star system containing an eclipsing binary. The main dimming cycle repeats about every 2 days, 20 hours and 49 minutes, making Algol one of the easiest variable stars for naked-eye monitoring.

Atik, Omicron Persei, is a hot multiple-star system around magnitude 3.8 and roughly 1,000 light-years away. Zeta Persei is a blue supergiant around magnitude 2.9 and roughly 750 light-years away, helping define the southern branch toward Taurus.

Deep-Sky Objects

The Double Cluster is the standout. NGC 869 and NGC 884 lie side by side roughly 7,000–7,500 light-years away. NASA notes that both are only around 13 million years old and likely formed from the same broad star-forming environment. Under dark skies the pair can be seen without optical aid as a hazy patch; binoculars split it into two dense swarms.

Messier 34 is another open cluster in Perseus, much closer at roughly 1,500 light-years and accessible in binoculars. Its stars are more widely spaced than those of the Double Cluster.

The Little Dumbbell Nebula, M76, is a planetary nebula near the Cassiopeia border. It is substantially more difficult than the clusters and benefits from a telescope and dark sky.

History, Naming & Mythology

Perseus was among Ptolemy’s 48 constellations. In Greek myth Perseus is the hero who killed Medusa and later rescued Andromeda from the sea monster. The surrounding sky contains most of the same cast: Andromeda, Cassiopeia, Cepheus, Pegasus and Cetus.

Algol has a particularly vivid naming history. Its modern name derives from Arabic wording commonly translated as the “head of the ghoul” or demon, matching its position in the traditional figure at the severed head of Medusa. Its periodic fading only adds to the unsettling reputation, although the variable-star mechanism is now well understood.

The constellation’s mythological network also doubles as a practical observing network. Once Cassiopeia and Andromeda are known, Perseus fits naturally between them and Taurus.

Observing Notes

Perseus is ideal for binoculars. Sweep around Mirfak first and the loose Alpha Persei Cluster becomes obvious. Then move north toward the Double Cluster, where even modest 7× or 10× binoculars show two distinct concentrations.

Algol is an observing project rather than a single view. Check it on several nights and compare its brightness with nearby reference stars. If you catch a predicted eclipse, the star’s fading and recovery can be followed over the course of an evening without a telescope.

A small telescope adds M34 and M76. The open cluster tolerates moderate light pollution; the planetary nebula needs darker conditions and benefits from a nebula filter.
