Pegasus is a large northern constellation best recognized by the Great Square of Pegasus, one of the dominant patterns of the autumn sky. Three corners of the square—Markab, Scheat and Algenib—belong to Pegasus; the fourth, Alpheratz, officially belongs to Andromeda. The constellation extends westward from the square into the traditional body and neck of a winged horse. Pegasus contains the bright globular cluster Messier 15 and the star 51 Pegasi, where astronomers discovered the first confirmed planet orbiting a Sun-like main-sequence star. The field therefore combines an ancient navigation pattern with one of the pivotal discoveries of modern exoplanet astronomy.
Field Overview
Pegasus covers about 1,121 square degrees, making it the seventh-largest constellation. The Great Square is enormous—far larger than a typical binocular field—and is best appreciated with the naked eye. Markab, Scheat, Algenib and neighboring Alpheratz define a nearly empty-looking quadrilateral that stands out precisely because its interior contains few bright stars.
From Markab and Scheat, additional stellar chains extend westward and northward into the Horse’s body and neck. Enif, an orange supergiant, marks the muzzle.
Pegasus lies mostly away from the dense Milky Way, so its background is comparatively sparse. The constellation is strongly connected to Andromeda observationally. Alpheratz belongs to Andromeda under modern boundaries but remains indispensable to the Great Square. This is a good example of an asterism crossing an official constellation boundary.
How to Find Pegasus
On northern autumn evenings, look east and then high toward the south for four stars forming a very large square or slightly distorted rectangle. The pattern is much larger than newcomers expect. Markab is the southwestern Pegasus corner, Scheat the northwestern corner, Algenib the southeastern corner, and Alpheratz the northeastern corner in Andromeda.
Once the Square is found, follow stars westward from Markab and Scheat to trace the rest of Pegasus. Enif lies well to the west and is noticeably orange.
Pegasus is best placed from roughly September through December, with October and November particularly convenient. Southern Hemisphere observers can see the Great Square during the same months in the northern part of their sky. Moderate light pollution usually leaves the four corner stars visible, but the rest of Pegasus benefits from darker conditions.
Notable Stars
Enif, Epsilon Pegasi, is the brightest star in Pegasus at about magnitude 2.4 and lies roughly 690 light-years away. It is an orange K-type supergiant and marks the horse’s muzzle. Its large distance means it is intrinsically far more luminous than its modest apparent brightness suggests.
Scheat, Beta Pegasi, is a red giant around magnitude 2.4 and roughly 200 light-years away. It is a semiregular variable and forms the northwestern corner of the Great Square.
Markab, Alpha Pegasi, shines around magnitude 2.5 and lies roughly 130 light-years away. It marks another corner of the Square and is a blue-white giant.
Algenib, Gamma Pegasi, is a blue-white variable star around magnitude 2.8 and roughly 390 light-years away.
51 Pegasi is only magnitude 5.5 and invisible from bright city skies, but scientifically it is one of the constellation’s most important stars. In 1995, astronomers announced 51 Pegasi b, the first confirmed exoplanet around a normal Sun-like main-sequence star.
Deep-Sky Objects
Messier 15 is Pegasus’s premier deep-sky object. It is a dense globular cluster roughly 33,000 light-years away and bright enough to appear as a fuzzy spot in binoculars under good conditions. A telescope begins resolving stars around its edges, while larger apertures reveal its intensely concentrated core.
M15 is one of the oldest known Galactic globular clusters and contains hundreds of thousands of stars packed into a relatively small volume. It also contains a planetary nebula, Pease 1, although that object is a challenging target for experienced observers.
Pegasus contains many faint galaxies, including NGC 7331 and the compact grouping known as Stephan’s Quintet in the broader region. These require darker skies and more aperture than M15. For a first observing session, find M15 from Enif before attempting the faint galaxy fields.
History, Naming & Mythology
Pegasus was one of Ptolemy’s 48 constellations. In Greek mythology, Pegasus is the winged horse traditionally born from the blood of Medusa after Perseus beheaded her. The horse later became associated with the hero Bellerophon, who rode Pegasus in the battle against the Chimera.
The constellation does not depict the entire horse. Classical and later star maps usually show the front portion of Pegasus emerging into the sky.
The Great Square is an observational label rather than an official figure. Its northeastern corner illustrates changing astronomical conventions particularly well. Alpheratz was historically treated as shared by Pegasus and Andromeda, but modern IAU boundaries assign it solely to Andromeda.
Pegasus gained a completely new kind of historical importance in 1995 with the discovery of 51 Pegasi b, helping launch the modern era of exoplanet astronomy.
Observing Notes
Start by judging the darkness of the Great Square itself. Under a dark sky, several faint stars become visible inside the Square. Under severe light pollution the interior can look almost completely empty, making Pegasus an informal test of sky quality.
Use Enif to locate M15. With binoculars, the cluster appears as a compact fuzzy star. A small telescope at moderate magnification makes the central condensation obvious and begins resolving the outskirts.
51 Pegasi is accessible with binoculars or a small telescope if you use a detailed chart, but there is nothing visually unusual about it. Its value is conceptual: you are looking at a nearby Sun-like star known to possess a planet.
RELATED CONSTELLATIONS: Andromeda — Alpheratz belongs to Andromeda but forms the northeastern corner of the Great Square. Pisces — lies south and east of Pegasus. Aquarius — lies south of Pegasus in a fainter autumn field. Delphinus — compact contrast to the enormous Square. Equuleus — tiny Little Horse borders Pegasus. Cygnus — connects the late-summer and autumn skies.

Successful reconstruction depends on preserving large-scale proportions across empty space. Absence of signal is part of the signal.
