Ophiuchus is a huge equatorial constellation positioned between Hercules and Scorpius. Its name means “serpent bearer,” and the traditional figure is unusual because Ophiuchus divides the separate constellation Serpens into two pieces: Serpens Caput and Serpens Cauda. Rasalhague marks the head of the figure, while a broad collection of second- and third-magnitude stars forms a large, somewhat house-shaped body. Ophiuchus also crosses the ecliptic, so the Sun passes through it each year even though it is not one of the twelve traditional zodiac signs. The constellation is rich in globular clusters, including Messier 10 and Messier 12, and lies against a complex Milky Way region filled with dark clouds.

Field Overview

Ophiuchus covers about 948 square degrees, ranking 11th among the 88 constellations. Its large area and lack of a single overwhelming bright star can make it difficult at first. Rasalhague, magnitude roughly 2.1, marks the northern end. Sabik, Yed Prior, Yed Posterior, Cebalrai and other stars create a broad body around the divided Serpens.

The southern part lies close to the Milky Way and the rich Scorpius–Sagittarius region. Dark molecular clouds such as the Pipe Nebula occupy the broader Ophiuchus complex, and star-forming clouds nearby are major targets for infrared astronomy.

A particularly useful fact is that the ecliptic passes through Ophiuchus. The Sun occupies the modern IAU boundary for part of each year. “Zodiac constellation” in the historical astrological sense and “constellation crossed by the ecliptic” are therefore not perfectly identical categories.

How to Find Ophiuchus

Find Scorpius and red Antares on a summer evening. Ophiuchus is the large region immediately north of the scorpion, with Rasalhague far above Antares. Hercules lies north of Ophiuchus, and the small arc of Corona Borealis sits farther northwest.

Rather than looking for one obvious icon, locate Rasalhague first and then trace south through Cebalrai and the broad lower stars toward Sabik and the Yed pair. Serpens appears on both sides of the figure.

Ophiuchus is best placed from roughly May through September evenings, with June and July especially good. It straddles the celestial equator enough to be accessible from both hemispheres. Southern observers see the lower parts much higher, while northern observers often get a comfortable view of the entire figure.

Notable Stars

Rasalhague, Alpha Ophiuchi, shines around magnitude 2.08 and lies roughly 47 light-years away. It is a rapidly rotating A-type star whose fast spin makes it oblate rather than perfectly spherical.

Sabik, Eta Ophiuchi, is around magnitude 2.4 and roughly 88 light-years away. It is a binary system of hot white stars and marks the southern part of the constellation.

Cebalrai, Beta Ophiuchi, is an orange giant around magnitude 2.8 and roughly 82 light-years away. Its warmer color provides a useful contrast with Rasalhague.

Yed Prior, Delta Ophiuchi, and Yed Posterior, Epsilon Ophiuchi, form a conspicuous pair on the western side. Their names refer to the “hand” of Ophiuchus in the traditional figure.

Deep-Sky Objects

Messier 10 is one of Ophiuchus’s best targets. NASA places it about 15,000 light-years away with an apparent magnitude of 6.4, making it accessible to binoculars under good skies. It is particularly interesting for its population of blue straggler stars, objects that appear anomalously young within an otherwise ancient globular cluster.

Messier 12 is another bright globular cluster nearby, slightly fainter and looser in appearance than M10. M14, M19, M62 and M107 add still more globular clusters within the constellation.

This concentration makes Ophiuchus an excellent comparative observing field. Instead of seeing one globular cluster and moving on, an observer can compare how concentration, brightness and stellar resolution differ across several examples in the same constellation.

History, Naming & Mythology

Ophiuchus was one of Ptolemy’s 48 constellations. The Greek figure is traditionally identified with Asclepius, the healer whose serpent became associated with medicine and renewal. Ancient accounts vary, but a common version says Asclepius learned secrets of restoring life and was placed among the stars after Zeus killed him to preserve the boundary between mortals and immortals.

The constellation’s relationship with Serpens is unique in modern astronomy. Serpens is officially one constellation but exists in two disconnected sky regions, with Ophiuchus physically between them.

The common modern claim that Ophiuchus is a “13th zodiac sign” mixes astronomical boundaries with astrological convention. Astronomically, the ecliptic does cross Ophiuchus. Traditional Western astrology nevertheless retains a twelve-sign system that does not correspond one-to-one with modern IAU boundaries.

Observing Notes

Ophiuchus is best treated as a region rather than a single shape. Learn Rasalhague, Sabik and the Yed pair first, then let binoculars fill in the large body.

M10 and M12 make an excellent small-telescope comparison. Start at low power to locate each cluster, then increase magnification enough to inspect concentration and edge resolution. Dark skies improve both, but their relatively high surface brightness makes them accessible from many suburban sites.

The southern Ophiuchus–Scorpius region is especially rewarding under a dark sky because broad dust lanes become visible against the Milky Way. Wide-field binoculars reveal more of that structure than a narrow high-power eyepiece.
