Lynx is a large but extremely faint northern constellation created by Johannes Hevelius in the seventeenth century. He reportedly chose the name because an observer needed the eyesight of a lynx to make out its weak stars. That joke remains accurate. Alpha Lyncis, the constellation’s brightest star, is only about magnitude 3.1, and most of the recognizable chain is fourth and fifth magnitude. Lynx nevertheless contains one of the Milky Way’s most remarkable globular clusters: NGC 2419, the so-called Intergalactic Wanderer, lies roughly 300,000 light-years away. The constellation is therefore a perfect archive field: visually quiet, historically self-aware and scientifically much deeper than its naked-eye impression.
Field Overview
Lynx covers about 545 square degrees, ranking 28th among the 88 official constellations. It occupies the broad region between Ursa Major, Auriga, Gemini and Cancer.
The principal figure is a long, weak zigzag. Alpha Lyncis sits toward one end, while 38 Lyncis, 31 Lyncis and other fourth-magnitude stars extend the chain northward.
The constellation contains no strong compact asterism. Under urban skies it can effectively disappear, which makes binoculars valuable for learning the field.
How to Find Lynx
Find the Big Dipper, Gemini and Capella in Auriga. Lynx fills much of the otherwise empty-looking territory between those brighter landmarks.
Alpha Lyncis is the easiest internal star to locate, but even it is not bright enough to dominate. From there, use binoculars to trace the chain northward.
December through April evenings are best, especially February and March. Lynx is well placed from northern mid-latitudes and can climb high.
Notable Stars
Alpha Lyncis shines around magnitude 3.14 and lies roughly 200 light-years away. It is an orange giant and the only star in the constellation brighter than about fourth magnitude.
38 Lyncis is a multiple-star system around magnitude 3.8 and can be split with a small telescope under suitable conditions.
31 Lyncis, around magnitude 4.25, is another orange giant and useful chain reference.
10 Ursae Majoris is an amusing naming anomaly: despite its Flamsteed designation, modern constellation boundaries place the star in Lynx, not Ursa Major. The historical name survived the later standardized boundaries.
Deep-Sky Objects
NGC 2419 is the standout. NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day describes it at roughly 300,000 light-years away, farther than the Large Magellanic Cloud and deep in the Milky Way’s halo. It is sometimes called the Intergalactic Wanderer because of that extreme distance.
The cluster is intrinsically luminous but appears faint because it is so remote. A medium telescope under dark skies can show it as a small fuzzy glow; resolving stars is much more difficult than in nearby globulars.
NGC 2683, the UFO Galaxy, is another worthwhile Lynx target. It is an edge-on spiral with a bright central region and mottled dust structure, visible in moderate amateur telescopes.
History, Naming & Origin
Hevelius introduced Lynx in the late seventeenth century to fill a large gap between existing northern constellations.
The story that one needed lynx-like eyesight to see the stars is unusually appropriate and has become part of the constellation’s identity.
Lynx has no ancient mythology. Its origin is cartographic and observational, reflecting Hevelius’s effort to organize faint northern regions as carefully as brighter classical areas.
Observing Notes
Lynx is an excellent test of limiting magnitude. Under dark skies the long chain becomes possible naked-eye; under suburban skies, binoculars may be essential.
NGC 2419 is a conceptual showpiece more than a visual one. The faint patch is almost 300,000 light-years away, making it one of the most distant Milky Way globulars routinely attempted by amateurs.
NGC 2683 offers more obvious galaxy structure and is a better immediate telescope reward.
