Lepus is an ancient constellation representing a hare crouched beneath Orion. It is one of the easiest faint constellations to locate because its position is so obvious: find Orion, then look directly below his feet. The line figure is compact, with Arneb and Nihal forming the strongest anchors. Lepus also contains Messier 79, an unusual globular cluster about 41,000 light-years away. Unlike most Milky Way globular clusters, M79 appears on the side of the sky opposite the Galactic center, and one hypothesis is that it may have been acquired through the disruption of another galaxy. Lepus therefore combines easy navigation, classical mythology and a genuinely interesting deep-sky object.

Field Overview

Lepus covers about 290 square degrees, ranking 51st among the 88 constellations. Its principal stars form a compact quadrilateral beneath Orion, with fainter stars extending the ears and body of the Hare.

Arneb, Alpha Leporis, is the brightest star at magnitude 2.58. Nihal, Beta Leporis, follows at about magnitude 2.8.

The constellation lies near the winter Milky Way but not in its densest band, giving it a moderate background. Orion’s brilliance can distract attention from Lepus, which is why many beginners overlook a constellation that is actually easy to locate.

How to Find Lepus

Find Orion. Look directly below Rigel and Saiph for a compact group of stars. Arneb and Nihal are the strongest pair.

Once those are established, trace Gamma and Delta Leporis to form the main body.

December through March evenings are best, especially January. Lepus lies south of the celestial equator but is easily visible from most inhabited northern and southern latitudes.

Notable Stars

Arneb, Alpha Leporis, shines at magnitude 2.58 and lies roughly 2,200 light-years away. It is a luminous supergiant. Its enormous distance means it is intrinsically far brighter than its modest apparent brightness suggests.

Nihal, Beta Leporis, around magnitude 2.84, is a yellow bright giant roughly 160 light-years away.

Gamma Leporis is a nearby multiple-star system roughly 29 light-years away. The primary is a Sun-like F-type star and is a pleasant binocular/telescope target.

R Leporis, known as Hind’s Crimson Star, is a famous carbon-rich Mira variable. Near favorable phases it can appear intensely red through binoculars or a telescope, making it one of the constellation’s most memorable stellar targets.

Deep-Sky Objects

Messier 79 is Lepus’s premier deep-sky target. NASA places it about 41,000 light-years away with apparent magnitude 8.0. Hubble material describes roughly 150,000 stars packed into a region about 118 light-years across.

M79 is unusual because it appears on the opposite side of the sky from the Milky Way’s central concentration of globular clusters. NASA notes the possibility that its unusual environment may relate to an external or accreted origin, though the exact history remains a subject of study.

Binoculars show M79 as a fuzzy patch. A medium telescope begins resolving its outer stars.

History, Naming & Origin

Lepus was among Ptolemy’s 48 constellations. It is traditionally the Hare beneath the feet of Orion, sometimes imagined as being hunted by Orion’s dogs, Canis Major and Canis Minor.

Unlike some constellation myths with elaborate narratives, Lepus’s identity is largely relational. Its sky position beneath the Hunter and near his Dogs tells most of the story.

The Latin name means hare, with Leporis as the genitive used in star names such as Alpha Leporis.

Observing Notes

Lepus is ideal for beginners because Orion does almost all the locating work.

After learning Arneb and Nihal, use a small telescope on Gamma Leporis and then hunt for M79 farther south.

R Leporis is worth revisiting over time because its brightness and deep red appearance vary. Carbon stars can look dramatically different from ordinary blue-white winter stars.
