Leo Minor is a faint northern constellation tucked between the much more famous Leo and Ursa Major. Johannes Hevelius created it in the seventeenth century to fill a relatively empty patch of sky. Its brightest star is 46 Leonis Minoris, proper name Praecipua, around magnitude 3.8. One of its stranger catalog facts is that there is no Alpha Leonis Minoris. Francis Baily assigned a Beta designation in the nineteenth century but never created a corresponding Alpha, leaving the constellation with an incomplete-looking Bayer sequence. Leo Minor also contains NGC 3344, a nearby face-on spiral galaxy whose structure offers a useful comparison with the Milky Way. It is a quiet constellation with excellent catalog history.

Field Overview

Leo Minor covers about 232 square degrees, ranking 64th among the 88 constellations. It lies above Leo and below the Big Dipper region of Ursa Major, with Lynx to the west.

Praecipua is the brightest star. Beta Leonis Minoris is slightly fainter, and 21, 30 and 37 LMi form the rest of the sparse field.

The constellation points away from the dense Milky Way, so the background is clean but relatively empty. That makes the weak stellar geometry easier to isolate under dark skies.

How to Find Leo Minor

Find Leo’s Sickle and the Big Dipper. Leo Minor occupies the region between Leo’s back and the Dipper’s bowl.

Praecipua is the best internal anchor. From there, binoculars help locate Beta and the numbered stars that form the loose frame.

February through May evenings are best, especially March and April. The constellation is high and accessible from northern mid-latitudes.

Notable Stars

Praecipua, 46 Leonis Minoris, shines around magnitude 3.8 and lies roughly 95 light-years away. It is an orange giant and the constellation’s brightest star.

Beta Leonis Minoris, around magnitude 4.2, is a binary system with a relatively short orbital period by visual-binary standards.

21 Leonis Minoris and 30 Leonis Minoris are additional fourth-to-fifth magnitude reference stars useful for tracing the field.

The absence of Alpha Leonis Minoris is not an astronomical mystery. It is a historical nomenclature accident, making Leo Minor a useful reminder that star catalogs were assembled by people over centuries rather than generated from one perfectly systematic rule.

Deep-Sky Objects

NGC 3344 is one of Leo Minor’s best galaxies. It is a face-on spiral roughly 20 million light-years away. Hubble images show a bright central region surrounded by a ring and loosely structured spiral arms filled with young stars.

Because we see the galaxy nearly face-on, its large-scale disk structure is easy to study photographically. Visually, a small telescope shows a soft round glow with a brighter center under dark skies.

NGC 3432 is another spiral galaxy, seen much more edge-on and interacting with a smaller companion. The contrast between NGC 3344 and NGC 3432 gives the constellation a useful mini-lesson in galaxy orientation.

History, Naming & Origin

Hevelius introduced Leo Minor in his 1687 star atlas. The name means Lesser Lion, positioning the small animal above the larger classical Leo.

The region had previously contained stars without a separate classical constellation identity.

Leo Minor’s unusual Bayer-letter history developed later. The constellation eventually received Beta LMi but no Alpha LMi, while the brightest star retained its Flamsteed designation 46 LMi and later gained the proper name Praecipua.

Observing Notes

Use Leo and the Big Dipper as external anchors. Leo Minor itself is not a constellation that rewards searching blindly.

Binoculars make the weak stellar chain much easier. NGC 3344 is the best telescope target and benefits from dark skies and low-to-moderate magnification.

The constellation is especially useful for teaching catalog nomenclature because visitors often assume “Alpha” must always mean “brightest star” and must exist in every constellation. Leo Minor breaks both expectations cleanly.
