Lacerta is a small northern constellation introduced by Johannes Hevelius in the seventeenth century. Its stars form a faint zigzag between Cygnus, Cassiopeia, Andromeda and Pegasus, and the pattern is sometimes described as a miniature Cassiopeia because of its repeated bends. Lacerta’s greatest scientific claim comes from an object that does not look like a galaxy at all through ordinary telescopes: BL Lacertae. Once mistaken for a variable star, BL Lacertae is actually the active nucleus of a distant galaxy with a relativistic jet pointed close to our line of sight. It became the prototype of the entire BL Lac class of blazars. That gives this modest Lizard an unusually important place in high-energy astrophysics.

Field Overview

Lacerta covers about 201 square degrees, ranking 68th among the 88 constellations. It lies in a rich northern Milky Way region between Cygnus and Andromeda.

Alpha Lacertae is the brightest star at about magnitude 3.76. Beta Lacertae and several fourth-magnitude stars create the zigzag pattern.

Because the Milky Way runs through Lacerta, the background contains many faint stars. The constellation itself is not bright, but binoculars reveal that the field is much richer than its simple line figure suggests.

How to Find Lacerta

Find Deneb in Cygnus and the Great Square/Andromeda region. Lacerta lies between them, southeast of Cepheus and north of Pegasus.

Alpha Lacertae is the best anchor. Once found, trace the alternating chain through Beta and the numbered Lacertae stars.

August through November evenings are best, especially September and October. Lacerta is visible from both hemispheres but is much better placed from northern latitudes.

Notable Stars

Alpha Lacertae is a white A-type star around magnitude 3.76 and lies roughly 100 light-years away. It is the constellation’s only star that stands out easily in suburban skies.

Beta Lacertae, around magnitude 4.4, is an evolved yellow giant and helps establish the upper zigzag.

BL Lacertae varies substantially in brightness. It appears star-like because the brilliant active galactic nucleus overwhelms the host galaxy. Its jet points nearly toward Earth, producing strong and rapidly changing emission across the electromagnetic spectrum.

Deep-Sky Objects

NGC 7243 is one of Lacerta’s better open clusters. It is a loose grouping of stars visible in binoculars and rewarding in small telescopes, especially under dark skies.

NGC 7209 is another open cluster with a scattered appearance and is well suited to low magnification.

The scientific standout remains BL Lacertae. Although it does not look visually dramatic, it is a galaxy billions of times larger in physical scale than a normal star and became the defining example of a class of blazars.

This is a useful observing lesson: apparent point sources are not always stars.

History, Naming & Origin

Johannes Hevelius introduced Lacerta in his 1687 star atlas. The name means “lizard” in Latin.

Hevelius placed the figure in a gap between existing northern constellations. Unlike many ancient constellations, Lacerta has no deep mythological tradition.

Its later scientific importance through BL Lacertae was entirely accidental. Hevelius could not have known that one of the faint “stars” in the region was actually the violently active nucleus of a distant galaxy.

Observing Notes

Use binoculars to learn Lacerta. The rich Milky Way background makes the zigzag easier to trace once Alpha Lacertae is found.

NGC 7243 and NGC 7209 are pleasant low-power cluster targets.

BL Lacertae requires a precise chart if you want to identify it visually. The reward is conceptual rather than aesthetic: the faint point is the prototype of one of astronomy’s most energetic active-galaxy classes.
