Crater is a faint ancient constellation representing a cup or goblet. It sits on the back of Hydra beside Corvus, forming part of one of the sky’s clearest mythological groupings. Crater has no star brighter than fourth magnitude and no Messier object, so it can look insignificant beside nearby Virgo and Corvus. That is exactly why the constellation deserves a careful page rather than filler. Its value comes from geometry, mythology and honest observing technique. Crater is a small test of whether an observer can find and preserve a faint pattern using brighter neighbors, and its cup-like line figure is more recognizable than the individual stars would suggest.

Field Overview

Crater covers about 282 square degrees, ranking 53rd among the 88 constellations. Its main stars form a shallow bowl or cup with a narrow stem-like extension.

Delta Crateris is the brightest star at about magnitude 3.6. Alkes, Alpha Crateris, is somewhat fainter and lies toward the base of the figure. Gamma and Epsilon Crateris help define the rim.

The constellation lies between Corvus and Leo/Virgo, directly above Hydra’s long body. It is far from the brightest Milky Way regions, so the background is relatively sparse and clean.

How to Find Crater

Find Corvus first. Crater lies immediately to its west on the back of Hydra. Corvus’s four-star quadrilateral is much easier to recognize and makes the best gateway.

Once you move west from Corvus, look for a loose semicircle or cup of fourth-magnitude stars. Delta Crateris is the brightest point, while Alkes sits lower and helps define the base.

Crater is best seen from March through June evenings, especially April and May. Northern observers see it moderately low in the south, while Southern Hemisphere observers get a higher view.

Notable Stars

Delta Crateris is Crater’s brightest star at about magnitude 3.6 and lies roughly 160 light-years away. It is an orange giant.

Alkes, Alpha Crateris, shines around magnitude 4.1 and is also an evolved orange giant. Its traditional name is associated with the cup itself.

Gamma Crateris is a white star around magnitude 4.1 and contributes to the upper rim.

Epsilon Crateris, around magnitude 4.8, helps close the cup shape and is useful in darker skies.

The stellar content is modest, but the color contrast between evolved giants and whiter main-sequence stars gives the field more physical variety than a quick glance suggests.

Deep-Sky Objects

Crater has no Messier objects and no bright showpiece nebula. The constellation contains many faint galaxies, but most require moderate to large apertures.

NGC 3511 and NGC 3513 are among the more accessible galaxies in the region. They form an interesting pair for dark-sky observers with sufficient aperture, though neither should be oversold as a beginner target.

For most casual observers, Crater’s main reward is still the constellation itself. That is useful editorially: the archive should not pretend every sky region contains a famous object. Some fields are valuable because they teach orientation, limiting magnitude and historical context.

History, Naming & Origin

Crater was among Ptolemy’s 48 constellations. In the best-known Greek story, Apollo sent a crow to fetch water in a cup. The crow delayed and then tried to excuse itself by blaming a water snake. Apollo, seeing through the lie, placed the crow, cup and snake together in the sky as Corvus, Crater and Hydra.

The arrangement mirrors the actual sky: Crater and Corvus sit on Hydra’s back.

The Latin name Crater means cup or mixing bowl. Its genitive, Crateris, appears in stellar designations such as Delta Crateris.

Observing Notes

Use Corvus as your anchor and move west. Crater is a good test of dark adaptation because the pattern becomes much easier after several minutes away from bright lights.

Binoculars can confirm the rim stars but are not strictly necessary under dark skies.

Galaxy hunting in Crater is a separate project. Use a detailed chart, dark skies and moderate aperture; the constellation itself is much easier than its extragalactic targets.
