Corvus is small, compact and unusually easy to recognize once found. Four third-magnitude stars form a distinctive quadrilateral beneath Virgo, creating a practical naked-eye frame often described as a sail or crooked box. The constellation represents a crow or raven in Greek tradition, but its modern scientific highlight is far more dramatic: the Antennae Galaxies, NGC 4038 and NGC 4039, are a pair of colliding galaxies whose long tidal tails and intense star formation provide one of astronomy’s classic merger laboratories. Corvus therefore combines a simple line figure with a deep-sky object illustrating how galaxies themselves evolve through interaction.

Field Overview

Corvus covers about 184 square degrees, ranking 70th among the 88 constellations. Its main quadrilateral is formed by Gienah, Algorab, Kraz and Minkar. Alchiba lies slightly outside the most obvious four-star box and extends the traditional bird figure.

The constellation sits south of Virgo and immediately next to Crater on the back of Hydra. It is well away from the dense Milky Way, so the stellar background is relatively clean.

That sparse background is why Corvus’s quadrilateral stands out despite none of the stars being extremely bright. It is an excellent example of geometry outperforming raw brightness in constellation recognition.

How to Find Corvus

Find Spica in Virgo. Corvus lies below and slightly west/southwest of Spica. Look for a compact four-star box low in the southern spring sky.

From northern mid-latitudes, Corvus is best placed March through June evenings, especially April and May. Southern observers see it higher and more comfortably.

Once the quadrilateral is identified, Alchiba can be added to extend the field. Corvus is small enough that the entire recognizable figure fits comfortably into one mental frame.

Notable Stars

Gienah, Gamma Corvi, is the brightest star in Corvus at about magnitude 2.6. It is a hot blue-white star roughly 150 light-years away.

Kraz, Beta Corvi, shines near magnitude 2.65 and is a yellow giant hundreds of light-years away.

Algorab, Delta Corvi, is around magnitude 3.0 and is a visual double-star target in small telescopes.

Minkar, Epsilon Corvi, is an orange giant around magnitude 3.0 and forms another corner of the box.

Alchiba, Alpha Corvi, is only about magnitude 4.0 despite its Alpha designation, another reminder that Bayer letters do not always follow modern brightness ranking perfectly.

Deep-Sky Objects

The Antennae Galaxies, NGC 4038 and NGC 4039, are Corvus’s defining deep-sky system. The two spiral galaxies are colliding and merging, producing long tidal tails that give the pair its name. Hubble images reveal intense regions of star formation triggered by the interaction.

Visually, the Antennae are challenging but accessible to moderate and larger telescopes under dark skies as two interacting glows. The spectacular tidal tails are primarily photographic.

Corvus also contains the planetary nebula NGC 4361, which is easier for many amateur observers than the Antennae. It appears as a compact misty disk and responds well to moderate magnification and nebula filters.

History, Naming & Origin

Corvus was among Ptolemy’s 48 constellations. In one Greek story, Apollo sent the crow to fetch water. The bird delayed, then returned with a water snake and a false excuse. Apollo punished the crow by placing Corvus, Crater and Hydra together in the sky, with the water cup always frustratingly out of reach.

That myth neatly explains the physical arrangement of three neighboring constellations and is one of the better cases where the story mirrors actual sky geography.

The Latin name Corvus means crow or raven.

Observing Notes

Corvus is a strong naked-eye teaching constellation. Once Spica is found, the four-star box is simple enough to remember permanently.

Algorab is a good small-telescope double target. NGC 4361 is a useful planetary-nebula challenge.

The Antennae require darker skies and aperture. Do not expect Hubble’s tidal tails visually; focus first on detecting the interacting central galaxies themselves.
