Circinus is one of the smallest constellations in the sky, but it contains a remarkable contrast. Its naked-eye figure is a tiny, faint southern triangle representing a drafting compass, yet within its boundary lies the Circinus Galaxy, a nearby active spiral whose dust-shrouded black hole has been studied by Hubble and Webb. Circinus was created by Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille in the eighteenth century as another scientific-instrument constellation. Its brightest star, Alpha Circini, is itself unusual: a rapidly oscillating chemically peculiar star only about 54 light-years away. For southern observers, Circinus is a compact field with far more astrophysics than its size suggests.

Field Overview

Circinus covers only about 93.353 square degrees, ranking 85th among the 88 constellations. Only Crux, Equuleus and Sagitta are smaller. The constellation lies immediately south of Centaurus and near Musca, Apus, Triangulum Australe, Norma and Lupus.

Its principal stars form a narrow triangle. Alpha Circini is the brightest at magnitude 3.19, with Beta and Gamma Circini around fourth magnitude. Under southern skies the shape is straightforward once the correct region is found.

The Milky Way crosses this area, so Circinus sits against a much richer stellar background than other Lacaille instrument constellations such as Caelum. That density is visually attractive but makes faint galaxies harder to observe because of foreground stars and Galactic dust.

How to Find Circinus

Use Alpha and Beta Centauri as the broad regional anchors. Circinus lies south of Centaurus, near the bright Southern Triangle, Triangulum Australe.

Alpha Circini is the easiest internal star. Beta and Gamma Circini extend the narrow geometry northward and eastward.

Circinus is best placed from roughly April through July evenings, especially May and June. It is circumpolar or nearly so from many southern latitudes. From most of the United States it is either extremely low or never rises.

Notable Stars

Alpha Circini, proper name Xami, is a magnitude 3.19 star about 54 light-years away. It is a rapidly oscillating Ap star, or roAp star: a chemically peculiar A-type star showing short-period pulsations. That makes it far more astrophysically interesting than its modest naked-eye appearance suggests.

Beta Circini shines around magnitude 4.07 and lies about 96 light-years away. It is a white A-type star and helps define the upper part of the triangle.

Gamma Circini is a multiple-star system whose components can be investigated telescopically. It forms the third principal vertex of the classical small figure.

Several other fifth- and sixth-magnitude stars lie in the compact field, but the constellation’s identity is carried mainly by the Alpha–Beta–Gamma framework.

Deep-Sky Objects

The Circinus Galaxy is the constellation’s outstanding object scientifically. NASA describes it as a nearby spiral galaxy about 13 million light-years away and classifies it as a Type II Seyfert galaxy. Its active nucleus contains a feeding supermassive black hole hidden behind thick dust.

Webb observations released in 2026 used infrared interferometric techniques to isolate hot dust immediately around the nucleus, while Hubble shows the broader dusty spiral. This is exactly the sort of object that gives the archive legitimate contemporary value rather than merely repeating century-old star lore.

Visually, the Circinus Galaxy is difficult. It lies close to the Galactic plane where foreground stars and dust interfere, and it is a southern target. Circinus also contains open cluster NGC 5823 and planetary nebula NGC 5315, both more accessible to amateur equipment than the galaxy under many conditions.

History, Naming & Origin

Lacaille introduced Circinus during his eighteenth-century southern-sky survey. The name refers to the drafting compass used to draw circles and measure distances—not a magnetic mariner’s compass. Pyxis represents the navigational compass.

Circinus therefore belongs to Lacaille’s family of instrument constellations and has no ancient mythological identity. Its story is about geometry, drafting and measurement.

That distinction matters because the English word “compass” can mislead visitors. Circinus is closer to a pair of dividers on an engineer’s desk than to the needle in a navigation instrument.

Observing Notes

Circinus is small enough to learn quickly once Alpha Circini is found. Trace the Alpha–Beta–Gamma triangle first and use binoculars to appreciate the rich Milky Way background.

NGC 5823 is a good small-telescope cluster target. NGC 5315 is a compact planetary nebula that benefits from magnification.

The Circinus Galaxy is a more ambitious project requiring a dark southern site and adequate aperture. Do not let spectacular Webb imagery create false expectations for the eyepiece.
