Canes Venatici is a small northern constellation with only two principal naked-eye stars, but its deep-sky content is exceptional. Cor Caroli and Chara form the Hunting Dogs beneath the handle of the Big Dipper, while the surrounding region contains the Whirlpool Galaxy M51, globular cluster M3, the Sunflower Galaxy M63, M94 and M106. Few constellations pack so many famous telescopic targets into such a modest line figure. Canes Venatici is also comparatively young: Johannes Hevelius formalized it in the seventeenth century from stars previously treated as part of Ursa Major or associated with Boötes. The constellation is therefore visually simple but astronomically dense.

Field Overview

Canes Venatici covers about 465.194 square degrees, ranking 38th among the 88 constellations. Its bright-star geometry is minimal: Cor Caroli, Alpha Canum Venaticorum, is the dominant star, while Chara, Beta Canum Venaticorum, supplies the second principal reference.

The constellation lies directly beneath the Big Dipper’s handle, between Ursa Major, Boötes and Coma Berenices. That placement makes it easy to locate even though the internal figure is sparse.

The region points away from the Milky Way’s dusty disk, opening a clear view toward external galaxies. That is why Canes Venatici is disproportionately rich in famous galaxies relative to its naked-eye appearance.

How to Find Canes Venatici

Find the Big Dipper. Look below the handle, especially beneath the region between Alioth and Alkaid. Cor Caroli is the brightest star in the otherwise sparse patch south of the handle.

Chara lies west of Cor Caroli and is much fainter, around magnitude 4.3. Those two stars are enough to establish the traditional hunting-dog figure.

Canes Venatici is best placed on northern spring evenings, especially April through June. It rides high for mid-northern observers. Southern observers can see it from many latitudes but lower toward the north.

Notable Stars

Cor Caroli, Alpha Canum Venaticorum, shines around magnitude 2.9 and lies about 100 light-years away. It is a beautiful double star in small telescopes. The brighter component is a magnetic chemically peculiar star and prototype of the Alpha-2 Canum Venaticorum variable class.

Chara, Beta Canum Venaticorum, is a nearby Sun-like star about 27 light-years away and around magnitude 4.3. Its relative similarity to the Sun has made it a recurring target in discussions of nearby solar-type stars.

La Superba, Y Canum Venaticorum, is one of the reddest prominent carbon stars in the sky. Its deep red color is striking in binoculars or a telescope and provides a completely different stellar experience from blue-white Cor Caroli.

The constellation’s stars are valuable in their own right, but they mainly serve as doorways into a remarkable extragalactic field.

Deep-Sky Objects

Messier 51, the Whirlpool Galaxy, is the headline. NASA places it about 31 million light-years away with an apparent magnitude around 8.4. Its grand-design spiral arms are interacting gravitationally with companion galaxy NGC 5195, helping trigger star formation. Under dark skies a small telescope shows two adjacent glows; larger instruments begin to reveal spiral structure.

Messier 3 is one of the brightest and richest globular clusters in the sky. NASA lists it around 34,000 light-years away with more than 500,000 stars. It is especially famous for its huge population of variable stars. Binoculars show a fuzzy point; telescopes resolve the outer halo spectacularly.

M94 is a compact spiral galaxy with a bright core, M63 is the Sunflower Galaxy and M106 is another large spiral with an active nucleus. Together they make Canes Venatici one of the best spring constellations for galaxy hunting.

History, Naming & Origin

Canes Venatici means “the Hunting Dogs.” Johannes Hevelius introduced the constellation in his seventeenth-century star atlas, depicting two dogs held on a leash by Boötes.

The figure arose from a complicated history of translation and reinterpretation of stars around Boötes and Ursa Major rather than from an ancient standalone Greek constellation.

The proper name Cor Caroli means “Heart of Charles.” The exact historical dedication is debated, with traditions linking it to either Charles I or Charles II of England. The page should present that uncertainty rather than choose a single tidy story.

Observing Notes

Start with Cor Caroli. It is a rewarding double star even under mediocre skies. Then move to M3, which is bright enough to tolerate some light pollution.

Save M51, M63 and M106 for darker nights. M51 is particularly sensitive to sky brightness because its spiral arms have low surface brightness even though the galaxy’s core is easy to detect.

La Superba is worth adding to any session. Its color is so strong that it helps break up a galaxy-heavy night with a stellar target that looks immediately unusual.
