Andromeda is a large northern constellation best known as the home of the Andromeda Galaxy, Messier 31, the nearest major galaxy to the Milky Way. The constellation itself is not especially compact: its main stars form a long, branching chain extending away from the Great Square of Pegasus. Alpheratz marks the starting point, followed by Mirach and Almach. Under a dark sky, M31 appears as a faint elongated smudge near the middle of the constellation and can be seen without optical aid. That makes Andromeda unusual: a visitor can use ordinary naked-eye stars to find an object whose light has traveled roughly 2.5 million years to reach Earth.

Field Overview

Andromeda covers about 722 square degrees, ranking 19th among the 88 official constellations. Its size is immediately apparent once its main line is traced. Rather than forming a self-contained shape, Andromeda seems to grow out of neighboring Pegasus. Alpheratz, Alpha Andromedae, sits at the northeastern corner of the Great Square of Pegasus but officially belongs to Andromeda.

From Alpheratz, a chain leads through Delta Andromedae to Mirach, then farther east toward Almach. Fainter stars branch away from that line. The result is less visually obvious than Orion or Cassiopeia, but it is extremely useful for navigation because Mirach provides the classic star-hop to M31.

Andromeda lies away from the brightest central Milky Way, so the field is comparatively clean. The galaxy is the dominant deep-sky attraction, joined by its companions M32 and M110. The constellation also contains the bright planetary nebula NGC 7662, commonly called the Blue Snowball.

How to Find Andromeda

The easiest route begins with the Great Square of Pegasus on northern autumn evenings. Find the square and identify its northeastern corner, Alpheratz. From there, move east-northeast through Delta Andromedae to the brighter orange star Mirach, then continue along the same general chain toward Almach.

To find M31, return to Mirach. Move northward to Mu Andromedae and then roughly the same distance again toward Nu Andromedae. The Andromeda Galaxy lies nearby and appears under dark skies as a soft oval glow rather than a pinpoint star. Binoculars make it much easier.

From mid-northern latitudes, Andromeda is particularly well placed from September through December and can climb very high in the sky. At sufficiently northern latitudes much of the constellation remains visible for a large part of the year. Southern mid-latitude observers can see it during the same season, but it stays much lower toward the north.

Notable Stars

Alpheratz, Alpha Andromedae, shines at magnitude 2.06 and lies about 97 light-years away. It is a hot blue-white star and historically carried a dual identity because it occupies a corner of the Great Square of Pegasus. Modern constellation boundaries assign it to Andromeda.

Mirach, Beta Andromedae, is an orange-red giant around magnitude 2.05 and roughly 200 light-years away. Its warm color is easy to notice, and it is the most useful navigation star in the constellation because it anchors the standard route to M31. A faint galaxy, NGC 404, lies very close to Mirach in the sky and is sometimes nicknamed Mirach's Ghost.

Almach, Gamma Andromedae, is about magnitude 2.1 and roughly 350 light-years away. A telescope reveals it as one of the sky's attractive color-contrast multiple-star systems, with a bright warm primary and bluer companion.

Delta Andromedae, around magnitude 3.3 and roughly 105 light-years away, helps connect Alpheratz to Mirach. It is less spectacular physically but extremely useful geometrically.

Deep-Sky Objects

Messier 31 dominates the constellation. NASA gives its distance as about 2.5 million light-years and apparent magnitude around 3.1. It is the nearest major spiral galaxy to the Milky Way and appears several times wider than the full Moon in long-exposure images. The naked eye sees only the bright central region, which is why the object looks much smaller visually.

M32 and M110 are satellite galaxies of M31 and can be picked out telescopically as smaller companions around the main galaxy. A low-power, wide field is more useful than extreme magnification because the Andromeda Galaxy is enormous on the sky.

NGC 7662, the Blue Snowball Nebula, is a compact planetary nebula in northeastern Andromeda. A small telescope shows it as a tiny bluish disk; greater aperture and magnification reveal more structure. It provides a useful contrast to M31: one target is a nearby dying star's shell within our galaxy, the other an entire galaxy millions of light-years away.

History, Naming & Mythology

Andromeda was one of the 48 constellations catalogued by Ptolemy. In Greek myth, Andromeda was the daughter of Cepheus and Cassiopeia. Cassiopeia's boast about beauty angered sea deities in the familiar tradition, and Andromeda was chained as a sacrifice to a sea monster. Perseus arrived, killed or subdued the monster, and rescued her. The surrounding sky preserves much of the same story in neighboring constellations: Cassiopeia, Cepheus, Perseus, Cetus, and Pegasus.

The mythological network is unusually useful because those constellations also occupy the same broad part of the sky. A story that once organized characters now helps modern observers organize directions.

The first known written description of the Andromeda Galaxy itself comes much later. Persian astronomer Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi described the object as a "small cloud" in his tenth-century Book of Fixed Stars. The galaxy was therefore a known naked-eye object centuries before astronomers understood what galaxies actually were.

Observing Notes

Andromeda is best approached in stages. First learn the chain from Alpheratz to Mirach and Almach with the naked eye. Next use binoculars to locate M31. Under a dark sky, 7×50 or 10×50 binoculars show an elongated central glow far more clearly than the unaided eye.

Do not expect the colorful, enormous spiral seen in photographs. Human night vision records the brightest central bulge and perhaps part of the extended disk under excellent conditions. Dark adaptation matters more than magnification.

Almach is an excellent small-telescope double-star target, while NGC 7662 benefits from moderate magnification. M31 is best around moonless autumn evenings when it is high. It is also worth returning under progressively darker skies; few objects demonstrate the effect of sky quality as clearly.

AND-08 is an acquisition-chain field. Operators expecting a closed geometric object tend to reject the correct solution because the primary references extend rather than return. Stable reconstruction begins with a shared corner node and proceeds through sequential confirmation.

One intermediate source is more valuable than the terminal bright node. It divides the chain, supports a secondary branch, and establishes the field's local scale. Operators who jump from the first bright reference to the most distant obvious source generally introduce excessive angular error.

This field rewards persistence over closure. There is no moment when the geometry becomes symmetrical. Confidence instead accumulates one verified interval at a time.
